Severance

I float away

adrift

vapors in the sky

trail off course

nodding acknowledgement

 

I can’t be

there for you anymore

part of your collection

validating relics

to shake off the dust

that accumulates residue

like time diverges

meeting at the point

of distance

it’s all just foreign now

 

I can’t read your column

eyes blurred with saline

words move

in jarring patterns

blood pulses

jumps from the veins

shopworn nerves

frozen and frayed

cracked skin

index finger

 

But can’t turn away

reminds me of you

when placed

in solemn context

words fester

take lives of their own

take good care of them

if not now,
